The penguins we saw were the Gentoo and the rare Adelie penguin. The Gentoo has a large white area on the head and the Adelie has a black head. The Adelie is much smaller than the Gentoo. In rescuing our sister ship, the M.S. Nordkapp, we missed seeing other penguins such as the Rockhopper and the Chinstrap. The snow is colored because algae grows in the area of the snow.

The Argentine base of Almirante Brown is located on the Antarctic peninsula near Skontrop Cove in Paradise Harbor. The Argentines sent down a crew every summer to rebuild the base but, as many other Argentine bases, it has been closed in recent years. The empty base makes for a nice landing where one can view the station and the Gentoo penguins that call it home. A steep walk up the snow covered hill is rewarded with a magnificient view of the entire bay.
