Sitka was designated the capital of Russian America in 1908 and was known as the “Paris of the Pacific”. It is an island with 14 miles of paved road and can only be accessed by ferry or by air. The included tour here featured a trip to the Alaska Raptor Center where injured birds are rehabilitated and returned to the wild, a visit to the Sheldon Jackson Museum, and a stop at Sitka National Historic Park. We walked through the Historic Park and saw many totem poles and remnants of the fort where the Tlingit Indians fought the Russians. Another place worth visiting is Saint Michael’s Russian Orthodox Cathedral in the center of town.
