Legend has it that Mopelia conceals the lost treasure of a WWI privateer known as the "Sea Devil". Nicknamed "Bird Island", Red-footed Boobies, Brown Noddles, Fairy Terns and Bristle-thighed Curlews and occasional sightings of the endangered Blue (ahiti) Lorikeets can be found here.
